Although living with Diabetes means following a strict set of treatment rules, patients actually live well with the disease these days. However, this is only true as long as they don’t run out of insulin supply. Patients with Type 1 diabetes require a supply of both insulin and glucagon for disease management and 40% of patients with Type 2 diabetes require insulin therapy. While these medications are usually available from local pharmacies, inhabitants of remote geographic regions sometimes can become isolated for days, running out of their lifesaving medication.

This is why in 2019 Professor Derek O’Keeffe of NUI Galway in Ireland approached us, encouraging a joint pilot project. No sooner said than done, we, in partnership with Vodafone, NUIG, Skytango, Survey Drones Ireland, and Novo Nordisk, delivered insulin beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) for the first time in Europe and over a distance of 21 kilometers despite harsh wind conditions. This project would soon become known to the public as the #DiabetesDrone project.

Read the whole story on Skytango's blog and watch a short film about the project below.

What’s even more exciting is that the world-famous Science Museum in London, one of the biggest Science Museums in the world, invited us to exhibit the actual Drone and share the diabetes drone story with the Museum’s visitors in their Tomorrow’s World Gallery.
